Types of Water Damage That Could Affect Your Home in Houston

March 31, 2019
Not all water damage is the same. In Houston, we know that better than anyone. When Hurricane Harvey tore through our city in 2017, we experienced the most dangerous type of water – black water – which caused extensive damage to properties throughout the region. Water damage can strike at any time, so be prepared in advance with basic information on the types of water that may affect your home. Here are the three different types of water damage.

Clean Water Damage is Not Contaminated
If there’s a best case scenario for water damage, clean water is it. “Clean water” is the purified water from your home’s own supply; it’s free from contaminants that could harm your health. But, it still requires immediate action to prevent further damage and mold development.

Gray Water Damage Has Minimal Contaminants
Gray water damage is the intermediate type. It’s considered contaminated, but its contaminants are not dangerous and may include soap residue, hair, food particles, dirt, and other harmless debris. Gray water damage can stem from your dishwasher leaking mid-cycle, a toilet (without solid waste) overflowing, or a washing machine overflowing.

Black Water Damage Is Extremely Contaminated
Black water damage is an entirely different game. This is the type of water that occurs during flooding from a natural disaster or a sewer backup into a property. This is the type of water we experienced when Hurricane Harvey flooded our area. Black water can contain bacteria, pesticides, waste, disease, garbage, and chemicals. This type of water should not be handled by anyone without the right equipment or training.
